Tools Every Homeowner Should Have In Their Toolbox
Having a toolbox handy is great for all of the little maintenance projects around the home. Being able to tighten loose nuts, put up nails to hang pictures, change light bulbs and put together new furniture are some of the more common tasks that need to be done. Having these tools handy will make your task list easier:
Drill & Bits - purchase a multipurpose drill that is battery operated for use in drilling holes and driving in screws. Drill bits should be interchangeable to provide you with a variety of Phillips, flat head and square drivers so that you can complete any task. A battery operated drill provides you more power to drive in screws, in a fraction of the time that a regular screwdriver would take.
Hammer - the rule of thumb is that the size of the hammer corresponds to the size of the nail, so it is recommended to have a lightweight and a heavyweight hammer.
Tape Measurer - purchase a tape measure that is at least 25 feet in length so that you can easily measure a room’s area as well as your yard space.
Step Stool - while this won’t fit in your toolbox, step stools are handy to have around for changing light bulbs, hammering in nails to hang decor and reaching top-shelf items safely.
Pliers - pliers are a great multipurpose gripping tool and come in a variety of types and sizes. Different pliers are useful in holding nuts and bolts in place, tightening pipes and valves, getting into tight spaces and even stripping or cutting wires.
Hex Keys or Allen Wrenches - handy for putting together furniture and bicycles.
Utility Knife - this tool is useful for a variety of things including breaking down boxes to make recycling easier, making precision cuts, scoring items and removing caulk from unwanted places.
Safety Gear - no matter how small the job is, it is important to protect yourself. Have goggles handy when working with glass, rubber gloves for cleaning with harsh chemicals, leather gloves for gardening and other dirty work, ear protection when using loud power tools and a dust mask to protect your airways.
