Tips for Caring for Your Wood Door

While being one the most used features of a home, your front door can also become the most neglected item of your home. If ignored, it can sustain daily wear and tear if it is not maintained regularly. If you have chosen a wood door with a painted, stained or a natural finish, then you’ll want to follow this tips to protect your investment.

Proper Cleaning
Your front door is one of the first features people will notice about your home. Without proper maintenance, your door’s exterior could possibly succumb to the elements. Direct sunlight, moisture, dirt and pollen can affect your door’s appearance and lead to damage. Make it a weekly routine to sweep the top and bottom corners of your door. This will help keep dirt and cobwebs from collecting.

Harsh chemicals are not recommended for cleaning your door. Apply a solution of mild dish soap and water to the door and scrub clean. Be sure not to use too much water as this may seep inside your home. Wipe down with a dry cloth. An eco-friendly option is to mix equal parts vinegar and water in a spray bottle and wet the door in the solution. Use a cloth to wipe away dirt and fingerprints.

Tougher stains may be removed by using a sponge or cloth dampened with mineral spirits. Wipe or scrub until the stains are loosened and then wipe off the excess debris. Make sure you are in a well-ventilated area away from children when using mineral spirits.

Check and repair any damage
Thoroughly inspect your door for any cracks or splits. These can occur over time and can affect the appearance and durability of your door. Simply paint over any chips or faded spots. Every two years, give your door a fresh coat of exterior primer and paint.
If your door has a stained finish and appears to be faded a simple re-staining can be done. Remove your door and place on a support surface such as sawhorses. Gently sand with the grain of the wood. Dust off excess dust and apply your stain in even strokes. If your door has a natural finish, apply a clear coat to add a glossier look.

Inspect the hardware
Check the hinges and brackets for any cracks and replace any hardware that appears to be damaged or not functioning properly. Clean thoroughly to remove any dirt or grease that may have built up over the years.

Perform an inspection of your exterior door at least once a year. A door that is properly maintained can add years and value to your home.
